Chairman’s Message

The Marist Association (formerly the ‘Marist Old Boys’ Association) has been in existence since 1934.   The objectives of the Association are as follows:

  • To maintain the Christian Ideals, aims and principles of Marist Brothers and to promote, as far as possible, the interest of the Marist Brothers’ College School in Durban  - St Henry’s.
  • To keep in touch with and foster friendly relationships among all past pupils of the Marist Brothers’ Colleges in South Africa.
  • To affiliate with or admit to affiliation any such body having objects altogether or in part identical with or similar to those of this Association, or engaged in any project or venture instituted to promote any such objects.
  • To establish or raise by means of subscription or otherwise a fund, which shall be devoted to the furtherance of the Association’s objectives.
  • To hold an annual gathering of members on, or as near as possible to the 3rd June, the day of the opening of the Marist Brothers’ College in Durban.
  • To create and maintain a fund for the granting of bursaries at the Marist Brothers’ College St Henry's, Durban.
  • To foster and build strong relationships and communication channels between the Association and the School Management Team, Staff and Parent Body.

The Supporters Club (Amalekites), which forms part of the Association, assists the school with the sponsorship of sports equipment and the funding of sports and cultural tours and improvement of sports facilities in the school.  Some of the projects completed with their support include the installation of netball courts, the provision of hockey goal posts and the building of a fully equipped fitness gymnasium that is available to parents and scholars.

Future projects that the Supporters Club (Amalekites) under the auspices of the Association would like to tackle are floodlights for the top field, the building of more cricket nets and the resurfacing of the tennis courts, as well as the building of a multi-purpose indoor sports facility providing for a number of different sports.  This facility could also be used for other cultural events, all under shelter from inclement weather.

Funds are raised for The Marist Association through events such as Golf Days, Barnyard Theatre evenings, etc.  In addition to this, the Association has launched The Sport and Culture Benefactors’ Fund.  Monies raised in this fund will be used for all Sport and Cultural projects, such as equipment and sports and cultural tours.  This fund will benefit all of the pupils and we urge you to support this fundraising scheme. Anyone donating to this fund will have a plaque with their name placed onto the Role of Honour on the exterior wall of the Association building opposite the tuck shop.  I appeal to all Old Boys who took part in any sport or cultural activity at St Henry’s to have their name put on the Honours Board as a contributor to this fund.

I also appeal to all St Henry’s Old Boys to pay their annual subs (R150).Your contribution will go towards the awarding of the Old Boys Bursary.  The more subs collected, will enable us to offer more bursaries to pupils at the School, as well as a Sport Bursary.

If any Old Boy on our mailing list knows of other Old Boys who do not receive our newsletters or who have not been in touch with the association for a while, please will you forward their details to us so that we may contact them. I would really like to get in touch with as many Old Boys around the world as possible.

I do wish you all well for the year ahead and may God take care of you and your families.

Yours Sincerely,

Max Reineke
Chairman
